Bordeaux
The worldwide reputation of this French region is primarily due to a geographical situation that historically enabled it to export its production to Northern Europe very early on. The temperate climate, with its proximity to the sea, and the variety of gravel and sandy alluvial soils also played in its favour. The 60 appellations are mainly made from red grape varieties (e.g. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Franc). Semillon, Sauvignon and Muscadelle are used in the composition of the whites, both dry and sweet.
