We're talking to you about his Winery
Baco's Folias de Baco project is bringing a new wind to the Douro, Portugal, by offering wines with a fresh, fruity, thirst-quenching profile!
At the origin of this wine project is Tiago Sampaio and his grandfather winemaker with whom, from a very young age, he has been surveying the magnificent vineyards of the Douro Valley. Fascinated by nature and very curious, Tiago studied agronomy at Santo Tirso and then at the University of Vila Real.
After 5 years of studies in Portugal, Tiago decides to specialize in wine and goes to Oregon (USA) to complete a doctorate in viticulture/oenology where he will learn modern winemaking techniques.
After this American escapade, and a diploma in hand, it's back home. On the land of his childhood, he created the wine project "Folias De Baco" in 2007.
He then settled on the coolest slopes of the Alto Douro valley, in the Cima-Corgo region, with plots of land with schist and granitic soils located between 500 and 700 metres above sea level.
With his university experience and his desire to combine modernity and tradition, Tiago is oriented towards the production of healthy wines.
Although its Winery is not certified, all the grapes (most of which come from old vines of autochthonous varieties) are worked according to organic farming methods.
The harvest is manual and carried out in small crates. In the winery, minimal intervention! Gentle pressing, indigenous yeasts, maturing on lees, no clarification or filtration and no or very little SO2 added.
Contrary to what is done in the region, Folias de Baco offers a large number of vintages with very different profiles. From the Pet'nat' of pinot noir to the highly digestible white of Moscatel Galego, via the clairet of planted grapes or orange wines raised in amphoras.
The wines retain a lot of freshness and fruit with low alcohol levels for the region. Beware, high drinkability! Boas degustaçoes!
