Choosing the right natural red wine

What is a natural red wine?

A natural red wine receives no inputs during vinification. This means there are no products added to the soil or vines. In short, there are no products that are not naturally present in the soil. Unlike conventional red wine, which may contain inputs;

Why choose a natural red wine?

The advantages of choosing this type of cultivation are respect for the environment. It allows long-term sustainable development of the vines and respect for the ecosystem. What's more, natural red wines are produced from organic or biodynamic grapes, which means they are grown without chemicals or inputs. No excessive filtration, which can complicate digestion.

Matching natural red wines

Food and wine pairings with red wine can be very varied, depending on the style of wine, its Grape variety, and its terroir. Nevertheless, here are a few recommendations:

Rich, tannic red wines, such as those made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Malbec, pair well with red meats like beef, lamb and game.

An excellent choice is poultry, such as roast chicken or grilled turkey. With lighter, more supple natural red wines, such as those from the Beaujolais region or wines from Grape variety Gamay.

Vegetarian dishes pair well with light, fruity reds, such as a Pinot Noir or Gamay.

Which regions for these red wines?

France is rich in wine-growing regions renowned for their red wines. Here are a few regions that will delight you:

In Burgundy, mainly in eastern France, red wines are mainly made from Grape variety Pinot Noir grapes. Burgundy wines are renowned for their elegance and finesse.

The Rhône Valley in southeastern France offers a wide range of red wines, from the full-bodied, spicy wines of the north (such as those from Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage) to the sweeter, fruitier wines of the south (such as those from Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas).

Located in the south of France, Languedoc - Roussillon produces a wide variety of red wines, from simple, fruity ones to more complex, structured ones.

What are the best natural red wine appellations?

There are many outstanding red wines produced in France, and it all depends on personal taste. However, here are some sure-fire values:

Bordeaux wines are world-famous. Among the most famous appellations are Pauillac, Saint-Émilion, Margaux, Pomerol and Saint-Julien.

Burgundy produces some highly sought-after wines, especially Pinot Noir. Appellations such as Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges are very popular.

In the Rhône Valley, the most popular wines are the appellations Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas, which offer rich, complex red wines.
