"Méthode Nature" Wine: The Industry's Only Official Certification
Unlike the generic term “natural wine,” “Vin Méthode Nature” is a recognized certification, approved by the French Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs, and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) in March 2020. Administered by the Syndicat de défense des Vins Nature’l, it enforces strict specifications that are verified annually, vintage by vintage. Here are the key points of the charter that winemakers must follow to obtain this label:
- 100% certified organic (AB or Nature & Progrès), regardless of the grapes' origin (AOP, IGP, Vin de France, etc.)
- Hand-harvested, without exception
- Native yeasts used exclusively for winemaking
- No added winemaking additives
- No intentional alteration of the grape's composition
- No harsh physical techniques (reverse osmosis, tangential flow filtration, thermovinification, centrifugation, etc.)—any exceptions must be approved in advance by the Syndicat
- No sulfites are added before or during fermentation; the finished wine may contain up to 30 mg/L of sulfites, which must be indicated on the label
- Deux logos distincts selon le taux de sulfites : "Vin Méthode Nature" pour les cuvées sans aucun ajout, "Vin Méthode Nature < 30mg/L" dès qu'un ajout, même minime, est réalisé
Each certified vintage can be identified on the label by the words "Vin Méthode Nature" and the association's official logo. To learn more about the full charter, visit vinmethodenature.org.
