All about Maison Stéphan

The wines of maison Stéphan

From the vineyard to the bottle, Jean-Michel Stephan works his Côte-Rôtie without oxygen, which results in a little reduction on opening. A decanting is therefore necessary, and then you get all the subtlety, finesse, freshness and above all that superb minerality! Here are wines that surprise by their authenticity, like Jean Michel!

The story of Winery Stéphan

The Winery Stephan was created from scratch in 1991 in the Rhône Valley. By himself. Today, Jean-Michel and his two sons own 5 hectares in the south of the Côte-Rôtie appellation (Tupin and Semons) and 5 other hectares in the IGP. Jean-Michel is a free spirit, truly independent. He works his wines the old-fashioned way, "à la Jules Chauvet" as he claims on his labels. Composed of several parcels (less than 1 hectare) on several Côte-Rôtie climates, the work is intense, especially sincehe refrains from using any chemicals in the soil and in the vines.

This means ploughing with a horse (in the lower parts), winch, pickaxe for weeding, compost. To date, theGrape varieties of Winery is composed of 30% of Serine (original variety of Syrah), 60% Syrah cloned and 10% ViognierThe wines range in age from 15 to 115 years old, with 6 cuvées in total (Côte-Rôtie Bassenon, Tupin, Les Binardes, So Brune, Condrieu plus 100% Syrah wines and a 100% Viognier in Vin de Pays). In winemakingFermentations are in an anaerobic environment (whole bunches saturated in CO2 for finer aromas). No use of SO2. Aged in old barrels. The wines are not filtered or fined.

Maison Stéphan: a family Winery
