We talk to you about Winery by Judith Beck

Judith Beck's family Winery is located in Burgenland. This is the flattest state in the country, but also the warmest. This state is known for the quality of its red wines. It stretches from the Slovakian border in the north to the Slovenian border in the south and along the Hungarian border.
What makes this area unique is Lake Neusiedl, which covers an area of 315 km² and, most notably, has an astonishing average depth of… just 1 meter! This lake is a massive water reservoir (designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site) that stores heat (through the mirror effect) and releases it at night. This is the main phenomenon that explains the early ripening of the region’s grapes.

LOCATIONS:

Due to the diversity of the soils, there is a wide variety of grape varieties in this region. The Gols vineyard can be broadly divided into three soil types:
. On the Parndorfer Platte gravel plateau: fairly cool and windy sites with relatively well-drained soils, well-suited for St. Laurent, Pinot Noir, and Zweigelt—for example, Schafleiten, Goldberg…
. Slopes on the edge of the Parndorfer Platte: southwest-facing, sandy-loam soils with limestone inclusions, particularly well-suited to Blaufränkisch—for example, Altenberg, Gabarinza…
. Flat sites near the lake (Heideboden), tectonically lowered, Seewinkel gravels well suited for Zweigelt grapes and for whites.

HISTORY :

Judith Beck acquired her knowledge at the Klosterneuburg wine school and even more in numerous internships at Cos d'Estournel (France), Braida (Italy) and Errazuriz (Chile).
Her goal: to take over her father Matthias’s winery. And it was indeed with her father that she began making her first wines in 2001. She has been running the Winery 2004. In 2007, with the help of her husband Uli, she converted the entire vineyard to biodynamic farming. The Winery an area of approximately 15 ha.
For Judith and her husband, “Saint-Laurent and Blaufränkisch are two very interesting grape varieties—as complex to vinify as they are challenging to work with, but with fabulous potential.” Their St. Laurent Schafleiten and INK wines are fine examples of this!

HIS WINES:

Red Wines: Judith explains: “Red wines ferment spontaneously (using indigenous yeasts) in stainless steel tanks or open vats. Some red wines are aged in large wooden barrels that have previously held other wines. The large wooden barrel allows the bright fruit flavors of Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch to shine through, making it a very valuable vessel for us. When aging our wines, we do not use stainless steel at all because, in our view, wine needs to breathe in order to develop.”

White Wines: “Due to the warm climate and sandy soils, we generally reach physiological ripeness very early. Acidity levels can be very low in hot vintages. That’s why we like to let the skins come into contact with our white wines to give them additional structure on the palate. The area around Lake Neusiedl is particularly well-suited to growing Burgundian grape varieties. Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Neuburger find optimal conditions here. All varieties are aged in barrels that have previously held other wines. As a result—and thanks to relatively long aging on the fine lees—we achieve a distinctive varietal character as well as lasting fruitiness and flavor complexity. The wines are well-suited for years of bottle aging.”

We were thrilled - even bewitched - by the quality of the wines of Judith Beck that we had the chance to taste. We particularly liked the red wines St-Laurent Schafleiten and INK! Gourmet, fine wines, full of black fruits and spices. And an incredible touch!

Well done and thank you Judith. Macht weiter so!
