Choosing the right Chardonnay white wine
What is a Chardonnay white wine?
A Chardonnay white wine is made primarily from Grape variety chardonnay, one of the most widely grown grapes in the world. Originally from the Burgundy region, it is also grown in other parts of France, such as the Jura.
Finally, this type of wine is very versatile, and can have totally different styles. This is due to terroir, vinification and ageing. Chardonnay has notes of white flowers, fruit, butter and wood.
In addition, Grape variety produces dry whites, crémants and champagnes. It is also blended with other grape varieties.
What's the difference between Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc?
First of all, these are two grape varieties widely planted around the world. Both come from white grapes, but have distinct taste profiles.
Chardonnay is well known to wine lovers and features on most café and restaurant menus in France. Its profile varies according to winemaking techniques and the wishes of winemaker. It can be light and fruity, or full-bodied, with woody, toasted, nutty or buttery aromas.
In conclusion, it's suitable for all occasions, whether as an aperitif with an acidic Chardonnay or to accompany a more substantial dish with a full-bodied white.
As for Sauvignon, Grape variety star of the Loire, Touraine and Sancerre regions, it stands out for its distinctive characteristics. It is often more acidic, mineral and refreshing, with notes of citrus, lemon, grapefruit or herbs.
Enjoy it on a terrace in summer, or with cheese in winter, as it's a light wine that goes well with dishes like raclette.
What dish to serve with this type of white wine?
Chardonnay's versatility gives you the opportunity to match your wine with almost any event.
Good news for pasta fans: creamy, pesto or Vongole pasta goes perfectly with a Chardonnay. Its freshness and flavor balance out rich dishes like pasta.
For a lighter option, dishes based on grilled or roasted vegetables, such as zucchini or eggplant, are excellent companions for Chardonnay.
And for carnivores, this wine goes perfectly with poultry dishes such as roast chicken, turkey or duck. If accompanied by cream or butter, Chardonnay lightens these rich dishes.
