Choosing the right Chardonnay white wine
What is a Chardonnay white wine?
A Chardonnay white wine is first and foremost a product of the Grape variety chardonnay grape, one of the most widely grown in the world. Originally from the Burgundy region, it is also grown in other regions of France, such as the Jura.
Last but not least, this type of wine is very versatile, and can have totally different styles. This is due to terroir, vinification and ageing. Chardonnay can have white flower, fruity, buttery or woody notes.
What's more, Grape variety produces dry whites, crémants and champagnes. But it is also used in combination with other grape varieties.
What's the difference between Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc?
First of all, these are two grape varieties that are widely planted around the world. Both come from white grapes, with distinct taste profiles.
Indeed, Chardonnay is well known to all wine lovers, and is present on most wine lists in French cafés and restaurants. The profile of Grape variety changes according to the winemaking techniques and the profiles desired by winemaker. It can be light and fruity, or woody, toasted with notes of toasted hazelnuts or butter.
In conclusion, this wine is perfect for all occasions, whether as an aperitif with a Chardonnay with good acidity, or to accompany a meat dish with a fuller-bodied white.
As for Sauvignon, Grape variety star of the Loire, Touraine and Sancerre regions. It's different from Chardonnay, which has well-established characteristics. It has good acidity, is mineral and refreshing, with notes of lemon, grapefruit or herbs.
We like to enjoy it on the terrace in summer or with cheese, and in winter with a good raclette, because it's still a light wine.
What dish to serve with this type of white wine?
Chardonnay's versatility gives you the opportunity to pair your wine with almost any event.
The good news goes to the pasta fan. Pasta with a cream, pesto or Vongole base will be a good choice with Chardonnay. Its freshness and flavor complement rich dishes like pasta perfectly.
Also, for a lighter version, dishes based on grilled or roasted vegetables, such as zucchini or eggplant, are good companions for Chardonnay.
Not forgetting carnivores, this type of wine is an excellent choice with poultry dishes such as roast chicken, turkey or duck. If you accompany it with cream or butter, as the wine will lighten it all up.
