We're talking to you about his Winery

Yvon and Jules Métras : A family affair!

Since 2014, Jules Métras has been forging his own path in the Beaujolais region, while staying true to the legacy of a Winery legendary. The son of Yvon Métras, a leading figure in the natural wine movement, Jules grew up surrounded by vineyards and Gamay grapes in Vauxrenard before setting out to travel and refine his winemaker expertise winemaker the globe.

Back in his homeland, he naturally joined his father at Winery, while developing his own vintages from rented vineyards and plots cleared in front of the maison . The recipes are well known, but formidably effective: late harvests, Beaujolais-style semi-carbonic maceration, precise workmanship, and absolute respect for the living. Density, minerality, energy, and finesse are already the hallmarks of his wines. Good blood cannot lie.

Yvon Métras, the father, is the driving force behind this family venture. Established since the late 1980s, this winemaker yet immensely talented winemaker has established himself as one of the most iconic and sought-after figures in the world of natural Beaujolais. True to the teachings of Jules Chauvet and aligned with the principles of Marcel Lapierre, Yvon has always championed chemical-free viticulture, based on soil management, plowing, severe pruning, and very low yields. His magnificent terroirs, sometimes planted with very old vines, have given rise to rare wines of exceptional purity and depth, including the legendary cuvée Ultime, which is largely responsible for his reputation.

At Winery, everything is done by hand, from the vineyard to the cellar. The grapes are harvested when ripe and vinified in whole bunches using traditional semi-carbonic maceration, without added sulfites and using only indigenous yeasts. An old press then takes over, working slowly to preserve the fruit, pulp, and juice. The rest is down to discreet, almost mysterious expertise, acquired over time... and jealously guarded.

In 2025, the torch was officially passed. Jules takes over Yvon’s vineyards and now unites all the vintages under a single name: Jules Métras. Note that the Chiroubles wines will no longer be produced starting with the 2025 harvest, as the vineyards are leased. There’s no need to worry about the future: Jules has always been in good hands. The Winery, now covering approximately 4.5 hectares, remains true to the Métras spirit, with the same high standards and the same pursuit of accuracy and precision.

Finally, the future looks exciting with the upcoming release of white wines : Jules has planted some Chenin and Aligoté vines, which are now old enough to start producing wine. A new chapter is beginning, while remaining true to Winery spirit.
