Choosing the right dry white wine

What is a dry white wine?

A dry white wine contains little or no residual sugar. As a result, it is very pleasant for wine lovers looking for wines that are rather low in sugar. This type of white wine is generally produced from fully ripe grapes and fermented until most of the sugars have been converted into alcohol, leaving little or no residual sugar in the final wine.

In short, dry white wines are often appreciated for their freshness, liveliness and ability to accompany any occasion.

Which grape varieties go into a dry white wine?

There are many varieties of dry white wine, each with its own particularity. Here are a few varieties that are sure to please.

To begin with, Sauvignon Blanc, which is often found in restaurants, is appreciated for its lively, fresh aromas of exotic fruit and herbaceous notes.

Otherwise, a classic you're all familiar with is Chardonnay, from the Burgundy region. It's a versatile Grape variety that produces a wide variety of dry whites. From fresh, mineral wines to rich, buttery ones.

Finally, you can try Pinot gris, from Alsace in France. This Grape variety brings aromas of pear, apple and almond, with moderate acidity.

How to accompany a dry white wine?

The advantage of white wine is that it's just as easy to pair with aperitifs, main courses and desserts. It's your companion for every occasion. It will delight all your guests. When you're short of ideas, take it for an aperitif with friends.

All in all, it's a perfect match for seafood and a fruity Chardonnay.

Likewise, a dry white wine from Burgundy, Alsace or Bordeaux will go well with meats such as blanquette de veau or poultry. If you're curious, try a Rhône wine.

To round off the meal, pair your dry white wine with desserts, whether fruit salad, tarts or chocolate-based desserts. Choose a Pouilly-Fumé, which will bring lightness to the palate.
