Great Burgundy wines - red

What is a great Burgundy red wine?

Burgundy's great red wines are among the most prestigious in the world, renowned for their elegance, finesse and ability to age beautifully. Made mainly from Grape variety Pinot Noir grapes, these wines are distinguished by their aromatic subtlety and great complexity. Burgundy's terroir, made up of a mosaic of plots known as "climats", gives each wine a unique expression.

Red Burgundy grands crus are often characterized by aromas of red and black fruits, floral notes, spices, and sometimes hints of undergrowth or leather, evolving over time towards more complex nuances.

What are the great red wines of Burgundy?

Burgundy boasts a number of appellations famous for their red wines, each with its own unique characteristics. Among the most prestigious are :

  • Romanée-Conti: Probably the most famous and expensive wine in the world, Romanée-Conti, produced in the Vosne-Romanée appellation, offers wines of rare elegance, with subtle aromas of red fruits, flowers and spices. It's a mythical wine for collectors.

  • Clos de Vougeot: This emblematic grand cru of the Côte de Nuits produces powerful, structured wines with a long finish. The aromas of black fruit, spices and undergrowth are typical, and the wine ages admirably well.

  • Chambertin: Located in Gevrey-Chambertin, this grand cru appellation produces rich, complex wines with aromas of black cherry, plum, licorice and earthy notes. Chambertin wines are renowned for their longevity and great structure.

  • Corton: Located in the Côte de Beaune, the Corton appellation produces intense red wines, combining power and refinement. Corton wines offer aromas of ripe red fruit, blackcurrant and violets, with well-presented tannins that allow them to age well.

These grands crus represent the purest expression of Pinot Noir in Burgundy, combining subtlety, complexity and ageing potential.

How to pair it with a great Burgundy red wine?

Burgundy's great red wines, made from Pinot Noir grapes, go perfectly with refined, delicate dishes. Thanks to their finesse and subtle aromas, they are ideal with white meats such as roast chicken, duck or turkey. Their elegance also goes well with mushroom-based dishes, such as risotto with ceps or pan-fried chanterelle mushrooms.

More powerful wines, like those from Chambertin or Clos de Vougeot, are well suited to richer red meats, such as rack of lamb, beef en croûte, or even game. Their well-integrated tannins meld with the flavors of these dishes, creating a perfect balance.

Red Burgundy wines can also sublimate mature cheeses such as Comté or truffled Brie, where the richness and aromatic persistence of the wine complement the creamy textures of the cheese.
