Antoine Arena's wines
winemaker Corsica and family traditionGrandson and son of winemaker Corsica on the Patrimonio terroir, Antoine Arena first studied law in Nice before returning to Corsica in 1975. He finally fell in love with the 3 hectares of vines of the family's Winery , which quickly became one of the island's leading estates. Natural wine from CorsicaHis natural approach emerged as a reaction to the large agro-industrial chemical conglomerates. Since 1980, with the help of his wife Marie and his two sons—who are now taking over the business— Antoine Arena has never shied away from the hard work required to reclaim Patrimonio’s finest terroirs. The Winery now Winery 14 hectares. In 2005, once again alongside his sons, they decided to take on the Hauts de Carco—a magnificent, well-oriented area, though one consisting of enormous boulders. It was enough to make anyone give up. After crushing, uprooting, and removing these boulders, this 1-hectare plot was planted with Vermentino and Bianco Gentile: determination—that is the word that sums up Antoine Arena and his family. He never gives up when it comes to preserving the terroirs and the health of the soil: plowing, no chemical treatments, natural manure applications, and so on—all to practice biodynamic farming on slopes steeper than 25°, where olive trees and scrub once grew. |
Organic and biodynamic winesAntoine Arena is a pioneer for this appellation, a driving force for many of his fellow winemakers. Powerful but extremely fluid wines, some with a great minerality, which require 1 to 2 years of ageing. The Winery is divided into 3 zones: - Carco on 3 ha (2 ha vermentino and 1 ha nieluccio), very hard limestone soils, east-west orientation. Grotte di sole on 3 ha (1 ha vermentino and 2 ha nieluccio), more clayey limestone soils, south facing. 5000 vines/ha- Morta Maio on 1.6 ha (nieluccio), north-south facing. 5000 vines/ha plus a few plots of land, one of which is Muscat. Winery Arena : the continuationThe future of Winery in the hands of the two sons: Jean-Baptiste, who returned to the Winery 2003 (after studying law) and now works in the vineyards, playing a leading role in the transition from “organic” to “biodynamic” farming. Antoine-Marie, who returned to Winery 2004 (after studying history and geography), oversees operations in the winery and cellar. Antoine, their father, is never far from his sons. Thank you to them for allowing us to enjoy natural Corsican wines! |
